Leaky and broken kitchen sink faucets are a common problem. But for homeowners this is one of the easiest problems to fix themselves. Many of the problems that are caused by faulty kitchen sink faucets are easy to repair and there are even many do-it-yourself kits that can help homeowners with this problem. So if a leaky or broken kitchen sink faucet is causing you some headaches, take heart in knowing that there are a few things that you can do without paying major bucks to a contractor!
Compression faucets are one of the most popular types of kitchen sink faucets. These kitchen sink faucets also have washers within them and so, they are one of the easiest faucet repairs that can be made. This is because it’s usually the washer that is the first to corrode or become damaged and replacing washers is extremely easy. Start by simply unscrewing the tap. This is where the temperature gauge will be. It will unscrew quite easily if there is not an indicator, such as a small blue or red triangle. If this indicator does appear on the top of the tap, you’ll need to remove that first.
Once the tap has been unscrewed, there will be a nut located there that needs to be loosened before you change the washer. This nut can be loosened with an adjustable wrench. Once the nut is loosened and taken out, you will clearly see the washer. If it looks corroded, damaged, bent, or broken, it is most likely the cause of your leaky kitchen sink faucet. Simply take out the old washer and replace it with a new one and reassemble the faucet in the exact reverse order of taking it apart.
If you’re having problems with your kitchen sink faucet and replacing the washer doesn’t seem to help, you may need to become a bit more involved. For most repairs that are a bit in-depth, hardware stores sell do-it-yourself kits for different problems with kitchen faucets. When buying one of these kits, you will need to make sure that you are buying a kit for the problem you are experiencing, such as nut replacement, and that you are buying the proper kit for specifically your type of kitchen faucet. These kits most often come with diagrams, descriptions, and step-by-step instructions on how to fix your broken kitchen sink faucet. However, if you are unfamiliar with the project you should ask a staff member at a reputable hardware store. They will be able to explain it much more clearly and give you a better understanding.
For whatever type of repair you are making to your kitchen sink faucet, be sure that you turn off the water supply to the house. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a kitchen full of water. It’s also important to remember that if you’ve taken the faucet apart and find that it’s actually an issue with plumbing and not the faucet alone, that you call a professional plumber. Plumbing problems are much different than faucet problems and you don’t want to get in over your head!
